Antibody Development

Antibody Development

Antibodies are widely used in research and diagnostics and have also revolutionized the medicine field by enabling target specific treatment for various diseases. The development of an antibody can be divided into 4 main steps:

Target identification and antigen generation
The selection and design of the antigen is a crucial stage in antibody generation and is a key factor for producing target specific antibodies.

Immunization or Library screening
Animal immunization induces an immune response and drives in vivo selection processes that yield antibodies specific to the target antigen.
Library screening offers another approach, enabling the discovery of specific binders from an extensive diversity of candidates.

Antibody screening/purification
For polyclonal antibody development, target-specific antibodies are purified from immune sera using affinity purification.
In contrast, monoclonal antibody generation is a bit more complex process that utilizes screening assays – such as ELISA and flow cytometry- to identify highly specific antibody candidates.

Antibody engineering and optimization
Adapting antibodies for diverse applications often involves strategic modifications. These may include genetic engineering, optimization of production processes, or physical modifications such as conjugation to enhance functionality and performance.
